Old Time Radio Shows

Escape

John Dunning's "Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio" hails Escape as being one of radio's greatest series of high adventure. This show, which ran erratically on CBS, was aired from July, 1947 until September 25, 1954. Escape is known for putting short stories by some of the worlds best writers on the air including stories by Rudyard Kipling, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Joseph Conrad. So, without any further ado we offer you... ESCAPE!

Series Description:

ESCAPE opened with the gripping voice of William Conrad booming out over the airwaves: "Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you - ESCAPE!". Moussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain", the show's theme, assisted Conrad in creating the right opening atmosphere. (The actual series of questions used in the opening varied from week to week, frequently to match the goings-on of the times.)

The show featured spine-tingling tales from such masters as Joseph Conrad, Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allen Poe. It was produced by William N. Robeson, and featured many seasoned radio actors.

ESCAPE was heard on CBS from July 1947 to September 1954. There were two pilot shows before it's first run. The first pilot was OUT OF THIS WORLD: "Dead of Night" on February 28, 1947. This show was repeated as ESCAPE: "Dead of Night" on March 21.

ESCAPE, as a series, started as a summer replacement for half of the hour normally occupied by THE LUX RADIO THEATER. It then aired for the 1947-1948 season, on Sundays. During the early half of 1948, broadcast day was different on east and west coast. Although the same scripts were used for both east and west cost shows, the casts and openings are different. The west coast versions used organmusic in place of the full orchestra of the east coast versions. The series again went to different days for east and west coasts in 1950, but in this case, the show was the same for both broadcasts.

Unlike the other CBS adventure series, SUSPENSE, which ran from June 1942 to September 1962 almost without interruption, ESCAPE seemed to have a rough life. It was frequently moved to different days through out it's run. There were even a couple of long gaps where ESCAPEleft the air, for example, from August 30, 1951 to October 12, 1952. Still, thanks to solid scripts, excellent acting and high production
values, ESCAPE is widely considered one of the best radio actionadventure series.

Log Comments:

There was frequent disagreement on broadcast date from one source to another, although the separation was only days. There were times
when ESAPE was broadcast on different days on the east and west coasts.

As mentioned above, the same script was used for different shows on the east and west coasts for shows 22 through 45. This log assumes each is a different show, as many catalogs indicate, since they are detectable different. For shows 139 through 154, the east and west broadcast dates were again different. This time there was no detectable difference, so they are not counted twice. The earlier east coast date is used, with the west coast date listed below the show title. For shows 22 through 45, vendors are listed for east coast only, since many vendors either carry both version or it was not clear which version they had.

"The Adversary" is shown with 2 different dates on many sources, so it's listed twice, once for May 6, 1954 and once for May 20, 1954.

I've inserted blank lines in the list between years, broadcast day changes and gaps in the series run. I've added "(lost)" at the end of the Title field if the show is believed to be lost. "(dup)", in the title field indicates that title appears earlier in the list.

Where known, the name of the author for the original work a show was based on is listed below the first occurrence of a title. Author names are not shown for dups.
